Best Time to Visit Ujjain
Weather, crowds and festivals through the year: how to choose the right time for your Ujjain trip, and what to expect in each season.

Ujjain welcomes visitors all year, but the experience changes a lot with the season. Weather decides how comfortable your days are, and festivals decide how busy the temples will be.
Here is a simple way to choose.
October to March: the most comfortable months
Days are pleasant and nights are cool, which makes this the easiest time for sightseeing, especially with elders and children. December and January mornings can be quite cold, so pack a warm layer for early darshan.
This is also a popular season, so book your room early for weekends and holidays.
April to June: hot summer
Summer in Malwa is hot, and afternoons can be tiring. If you visit in these months, plan temple visits for early morning and evening, rest indoors in the afternoon, and drink plenty of water. Crowds are often lighter on weekdays.
July to September: monsoon and Shravan
The monsoon cools the city and the countryside turns green. It is also the season of Shravan, the month dedicated to Lord Shiva, when Mahakaleshwar sees its biggest regular crowds. The Mahakal Sawari processions through the city on Shravan Mondays are a special sight.
If you plan to visit during Shravan, expect long queues and book your stay well in advance.
Festivals worth knowing about
- Mahashivratri (usually February or March). One of the busiest days of the year at Mahakaleshwar.
- Shravan month (usually July to August). Large crowds and the Mahakal Sawari on Mondays.
- Navratri (usually September or October). Harsiddhi temple is beautifully lit.
- Simhastha Kumbh. Held in Ujjain once every twelve years on the banks of the Shipra. The next Simhastha is expected in [CONFIRM OFFICIAL SIMHASTHA DATES].
So when should you go?
- For comfortable sightseeing: October to March.
- For a festival experience: Shravan or Mahashivratri, if you are ready for crowds.
- For quieter temples: weekdays outside festival periods.
